TDR: Hungry like the wolf

  • Welp, college football is over so watch us slowly ease into talking about basketball more and more. Let’s start off with some NBA news. This week, Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau was fired, leaving Ryan Saunders as the man to take his place as the interim head coach. Ryan is the son of late legendary coach Flip Saunders, and last night was his first game at the helm. The result? An impressive 119-117 Timberwolves road victory over the Thunder. At 32, Saunders became the youngest head coach to win an NBA game since the 1978-79 season, when Dave Cowens did it at the age of 30. After the game, all the Timberwolves players mobbed Saunders in the locker room, showering him with water. It was a feel good night, and one Flip probably looked down on smiling. Tears.
  • On the college side of basketball, let’s talk about Duke and Zion Williamson- because, ya know, they aren’t talked about enough. Last night, Duke traveled to Winston Salem to take on Wake Forest in their first true road game of the season. Yes, their first one. On January 8. It didn’t matter. Zion erupted in what may have been his most impressive performance yet, going for 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists while leading Duke to an 87-65 victory. With the win, Duke improves to 2-0 in the ACC, and 13-1 overall on the season. Stay tuned to see if anyone in the ACC will be able to slow them down this year.

Put me in coach

There were a billion coaching changes yesterday, aka three. The Arizona Cardinals hired Kliff Kingsbury (former Texas Tech coach who everyone thinks is super hot, but I say he just wears a suit and sunglasses well) and former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians moved on to Tampa Bay. So Kliff was hired to be USC’s offensive coordinator after he was fired from Texas Tech, but then the NFL came a knockin’ so he peaced out of there real quick. Meanwhile, Bruce Arians was living the retirement life aka he was an analyst for CBS. He’s 66 and has had health issues throughout the years, but he orchestrated a quick turnaround when he joined the Cardinals a few years back, and that’s what the Bucs need right now. Oh, and then the Packers hired Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur as their head coach. Quite a changeup from their last coach Mike McCarthy who they fired after 13 years during the regular season. Matt is 39, and the young hotness out of Nashville. Hope you packed your heavy coat, bud.

Hard fall

This was a scary one. Oklahoma City Thunder big man Nerlens Noel took a rough fall and hit his head on the floor hard last night. It appeared he was knocked out cold after he went up to block a shot, was hit in the face with an elbow then fell to the ground. He remained motionless for a few minutes until he was loaded on a stretcher and taken off the floor. Super scary stuff. We should get an update on his condition today.
